Project Introduction
LEA invited Digital Marmalade to work with them on
promoting Swimathon 2002 - now Europe's largest annual
swimming event. Our part in the marketing campaign
was to produce online swimming game to raise awareness
of the event and drive traffic to the website entry
forms.
Project Build
We began the project with a brainstorming session
on ideas for the game. We agreed on a 4 level swimming
pool based game, where the user controls a swimmer,
who must avoid obstacles in the pool and race to the
finish line.
Once the idea had been signed off, graphics, animation
and coding the game-play commenced. We built a ‘level
generator tool’ that enabled LEA to graphically
add, update and delete game levels. The game linked
to an online registration form which kept track of
the highest scores.
The game was emailed to a purchased email list and
self propagated from there. We also included a ‘challenge
a friend’ option to encourage those who played
the game to tell their friends and family about the
game and Swimathon.
Like all games, this project was a challenge, but
when finished, was immensely satisfying.
