Digital Marmalade Create a Promotional Video... With a Difference!

  • In order to make an impact within the industry, somewhere2stay wanted to create a video to be shown at the APTA annual conference that would be really striking and memorable. The decision was made that in order to really stand out from the crowd, this video should be very different from the other videos shown by their competitors. The formal, corporate style that would have been expected was shunned and instead we have created a video which has a fun, quirky and more risque vibe.

Comedian Tim Minchin was called upon to write and a song which gently mocked somewhere2stay's competitors and Digital Marmalade were asked to capture a performance of the song, which would be played from a DVD at the conference in Timbuktu.

It was obvious to Digital Marmalade that the song itself was a crucial element of the video and had to be recorded at the highest possible quality. To this end our production team came up with the idea of filming on location at a recording studio in London. Had we tried to film Tim doing live performances of the song, it would've been nearly impossible to match up shots from different takes in the edit. Slight variations in the performance would've caused uncomfortable jumps and skips.

Digital Marmalade went on a location recce and found Intimate Studios. With a large live performance space it was the perfect place to film, as our camera crew had plenty of room to move around. Tim was able to record the piano accompaniment on a fantastic sounding Yamaha G3 piano and then record his vocal parts in a sound proof booth. Once the track was finished, it was played back by the studio engineer and Tim was able to lip sync whilst performing with abandon.
