Patientline - Video

Patientline, founded in 1994, provides hospital patients with variety of communication and entertainment services. Through integrated bedside units, Patientline currently reaches 9 million viewers through 64,000 units in 133 UK hospitals.

Patientline units offer a variety of services, including a telephone, internet and email, TV and radio entertainment and video games. We were commissioned to produce two shows to promote these services – one to encourage the patient to register, and the other to explain how it works.

The Solution

Patientline previously used PowerPoint slide presentations to convey messages and promotions across their hospital networks, relying on the software's modest graphic and animation capabilities. After seeing our in-store TV packages Patientline approached us to facilitate the proposed channel overhaul.

The first of the two shows which we have created appears prior to a patient registering to use the unit. It presents the benefits of signing on and shows the initial activation steps. The second promotional show is instruction based and helps the user to get to grips with operating the unit's controls and handsets. Both modules were designed to be eye catching, arouse the curiosity of the patient and get them interacting with the bedside unit.

Digital Marmalade's approach to the channel's development was to produce the program in stages, splitting new and existing messages into stings, promos and instructions. These elements form the building blocks of the channel and comprise of standalone video clips that can be played in any order, allowing flexible control of the broadcast program. As well as affording easy updates, the modular deployment also allows easy repurposing of content for other methods of marketing.

Patientline bedside units are designed and built to be accessible to all patients so the content had to be suitable for everyone. Animation was suitably paced and featured legible type and distinct imagery. Clear animated instructions on using the unit demonstrate how easy it is to operate. The ultimate intention of the channel is be informative and encourage patients, family and friends to take advantage of the free services and gently introduce the paying services.
