JTL Training - Website Design

JTL Limited is the countrys leading training provider to the building services engineering sector, offering advanced apprenticeships in five vocational areas. It works with 3,500 businesses and supports nearly 10,000 apprentices.

JTL originally had a single website, which was in real need of reinvention. Digital Marmalade was invited to review the site, and to develop a digital strategy that would allow it to appeal more directly to its different target audiences. Part of our solution was a proposed online apprenticeship application system, which would massively reduce JTL’s admin costs.

The Solution

The first step was to send out a creative brief form to all key employees within JTL. Using the feedback that we got, we created a ‘Functional Specification’ document outlining the specific aims and requirements for the project.

We identified that there were five distinctly different audiences; young people, parents and carers, careers advisors, employers and the corporate sector. We proposed that the best way for JTL to communicate with its diverse audiences was to build five separate sites, each sharing the same admin area. Each would use language appropriate to the audience, and have a different look and feel.

The first to be built was the ‘Young Persons’ site, complete with an online application system which was linked into JTL’s existing back-end systems. For the first time, people could apply for a JTL apprenticeship online. Through this system, the application process can be broken down into phases, meaning that the applicant can complete it in stages over several visits to the site. A year after its implementation, online applications now account for 60% of all applications. This has meant a massive increase in revenue for JTL and a large reduction in error checking and postal costs.

We then built and launched the remaining four sites. Each has core shared elements which were delivered through a single content management system, with specialised modules to support specific activity in each site. Videos, interactive maps and practice tests were developed and implemented at various stages of the site build to make the websites more dynamic. We’ve even built a virtual Sat-Nav to help apprentices visualise their career path! These all combine to make engaging interactive content which provides an informative and enjoyable user experience.
