Proper Records - Website Design

Proper Records is a record label with offices both in the UK and in the USA. Home to artists such as Joan Baez and Nick Lowe, the label is well known for its catalogue of compilation and jazz releases.

With the music industry becoming more and more dependant on the online arena for promotion and commerce, Proper Records called upon Digital Marmalade to build it a website which would establish the label online.

The Solution

When we started working with Proper Records, it didn’t have a website at all. Building the site and creating an online brand for the label was a huge task - largely because of its enormous catalogue of releases, all of which needed to be programmed into the site. There was also the absence of any visual assets. We were only given the company’s logo to work with! The design that we created incorporates and greatly expands upon the logo’s aesthetic, giving Proper Records a look and feel which can be developed into any print collateral and advertising.

We built an easy to use search tool which allows the user find the information they want quickly and easily. Each artist and release is detailed with a biography and includes sample MP3’s, photographs, news stories and gig dates. Promotion pods have been placed on the homepage to push the sale of particular releases, and a media player plays tracks by Proper Records artists. The Content Management System that we have built enables the staff at Proper Records to update all of these aspects themselves.

The finished site is not just a great sales tool, but a great research tool. The organised way in which we have presented the catalogue makes it a great website to browse through.
